Weston Vula Architects approached the interior ‘living space’ as a ‘blank-canvas.’ Most imperative was the choice of materials to be in ‘Hive-keeping’, through the use of recyclables. Using donated and collected materials, we set about creating our HIVE.
Beginning with an end in mind, and through a series of rendered visualisations, we arrived at a final integrated approach that employed intelligent design dexterity, turning this ‘blank-canvas’ into a tangible, living and breathing workspace.
The approach was a success, integrating a clever use of limited space, increased storage capacity and visually extending the size of the office. Creating anaesthetically inspiring work environment, with its authentic and uncanny resemblance to nature, is befitting the firm’s aspirations.
In the months leading up to the project, a discarded Pomegranate Tree became the structure’s organic focal point. We then affixed two-thousand recyclable tubes cut to variable lengths to the ceiling. We combined this installation with alighting grid and an evolving environment featuring an ’up-cycled’ oak armchair and a bespoke conference table top. Untreated pine boards were fashioned into legs fit with industrial wheels and framed-in with a central glass-top insert doubling as a light box. The sectional, perspective drawing wall, features a streetscape surrounded by additional, multi-functional storage.
On viewing, one is struck by the ever-changing play between light and shadow. The interaction of the observer is immersed in the design that changes both visually and contextually depending on their perspective when observing, or at point of interaction.
With the transformation completed, our workspace has come to life. A bright environment, suitable for work, creativity and play. Our HIVE is the metamorphosis of plain walls, which became the lungs breathing life into the quality of work. Shielding us from the mundane, it is a shell that is constantly redesigning itself.
